Perhaps he was just not serious enough about it. Oboe is an instrument you can not take casually. Not if you want to sound good, anyway. I teach elementary instrumental music and I usually hand pick my oboe players. I do not let just anyone play it. They have to have a good ear and be a very good student academically.
Other than that I do not know about the personality thing.
