I have removed the lacquer from several instruments, and it made a big difference...

...to the cost of the repairs I was having done.

If there was any aural difference that could not be explained by said repairs, I could not detect it. A/B comparisons are difficult if not impossible, for the simple reason that any two instruments are likely to be different by a greater margin than the effect of the lacquer, or the change is made on a single horn, the time gone by while the switch is being made will have an effect greater than the effect of the lacquer.

The testing that Matt referred to looked only at the sound of the instrument out front. The effect that Mark reported addressed only the sound and feel of the instrument to the player. Both may be right to some extent, but the subjectivity of the player's perspective is suspect. It's not like Monsterweights, which can at least be change back and forth repeatedly.
