Matt Walters recently added a dog-leg 5th to one of my tubas, and it blows more freely and securely throughout its range than it ever did in its original 4 valve incarnation. I think it has as much to do with the intrinsic potentials of the instrument, as well as how the work is done. Also Matt strongly advised a Yamaha rotor for the 5th valve for overall design and quality considerations. I took his advice. I've had this instrument for a long time, but since I got it back, it's a continuing revelation.
