I certainly am not a mouthpiece expert, but I do know that the "C4" Miraphone thing (or whatever it is called these days + the Schilke exact copy) have very small throats. Very many agree that this widely-used model benefits from enlarging the throat size (to perhaps .325"). This is only one specific example, though.

I would have to stand in line behind you and say that most well-designed tuba mouthpieces (with quite large throats already) go "dead" with throats that have been made much larger than designed. Funny: No one ever considers SHRINKING the throat sizes of mouthpieces that they own. Why?: "You can pee on something easier than you can wipe it up." [i.e. Its quite easy to "drill something out" but quite difficult to add material back.]
