You bet! I have two degrees (B.Mus. & M.Mus.) both in tuba performance. Not worth the paper they're printed on but the training required to get them was invaluable. Not to say that it can't be done (there are examples of professional players who majored in something else) but, for me, it was the best route to go. Train in college for what you dream to do. A focused curriculum was the best thing for me.
