I just recorded the FIU tuba/euph ensemble using a mini-disk recorder and an AT-822 microphone. The results were pretty astonishing. While I'm no audiophile, I've never heard a better setup than this, even from some of the studio setups I've used for audition tapes. When I listen to the results, it sounds to me exactly like what I heard in the room. I can even tell differences in sound quality between the players. The things that impressed me the most were how easy it was to use and how close the reproduction is to the original. None of my players sounded any different (better or worse) to me than when they play live. If I were doing audition tapes today, I wouldn't hesitate to use this setup to make them.
