those thoughtful and carefully worded questions are moot,
since the horn got SNATCHED up for 2800 bucks (if I'd seen
it before it was sold I'd have GRABBED it!)

now..to your (albeit moot) questions...

fewer of the 185's were built and sold than 184's and 186's
and even the (much later) 188's. Part of the reason as I understand
is that while you could get a 184 or 186 in BBflat,
185's were only built in CC. Someone else may want to confirm
this if it's important...
or flame me if it's REALLY important,
but I am just repeating what I've been told.
It was a popular studio horn and also with students of certain teachers,
but remember that's a very small population. Irregardless, to question
if they seldom come on the market because there were few built, or because
they're coveted, is a little silly. Your unasked question ("were there few built
because they were 'bowsers'?" is a matter of preference, and today probably
irrelevant. This BBS has seen all of two 185's show up for sale
in the past couple of years, and although there's been more than DOUBLE
that number of 184's pitched, that's STILL just a half-dozen lil horns,
and the mystique of the 184's is almost (for some I KNOW) larger than life.
They are, after all, only tubas

i.m.o.
