Five Strauss Tone Poems with Concertgebouw and Haitink is excellent and cheap - 2 CDs for under $20. The Cleveland Orchestra with Pierre Boulez doing Stravinsky's Petrouchka and Rite of Spring is very clean and energetic in addition to being done very recently. By contrast, the same orchestra under George Szell doing Hindemith's Symphonic Metamorphosis is much older but an excellent example of Szell's musicianship. The entire Wagner Ring cycle with the Vienna Phil under George Solti is awesome. And for Berlioz - 8 overtures: Montreal Symphony with Dutoit, Symphony Fantastique, overtures, and Hungarian March: Detroit Symphony with Paray, Symphony Fantastique: Chicago Symphony with Barenboim.
