porkorny himself states that if you look at the score it makes sense to drop these mentioned spots down an octave to follow simliar lines played by other voices in the orchestra. he also recommends NOT changing the part for an audition (or jury). i don't believe this a jock thing. many instruments played at the times some pieces were written were limited in what they could do in certain registers and it is obvious the composer displaced the octave of the original line to fit the demands of the instrument. if you listen to a recording of this piece you can hear the other bass voices' parts during these sections (the line played by mr. porkorny) to be more prominent. this is an example of porkorny trying to bring the most out the music as possible.
