Red rot is otherwise known as "dezincification". Brass is an alloy of zinc and copper (and a small amount of other metals). When saliva acids attack brass, they tend to attack the more electrochemically active zinc rather than the copper. The result is that there's a sort of spongy copper left behind. Eventually, it turns into a leak.

Gold brass is less subject to red rot than plain yellow brass; nickel-silver is even less so. Miraphone offers replacement leadpipes in yellow, gold brass and nickel-silver, but each affects the tone slightly differently.
