When he did a clinic at my HS in Texas (a long time ago) Mr. McBeth said that very same thing - but he was speaking about unsupported sounds that waver in pitch. Any STEADY tone generated on a musical instrument that is not INTENTIONALLY bad is able to be measured by a tuner. Some Middle School directors have bands that play quite well in tune despite the kids with rotten (but hopefully improving) timbres. But the kid has to be taught to support the tone with adequate air to hold it steady.

Having clinched teeth (or any other problem common to young kids) does not eleminate the ability to tune that kid. You CAN tune a bad sound. Sound quality and pitch frequency are two seperate issues.

Yes, Mr. McBeth was famous for that phrase. But you are inadvertantly removing it from its intended contextual setting.
