I have seen comments on this BBS quite recently concerning tubas carried in this way, but I have never seen anyone use a harness of this kind. I have three old Eb basses (I'm a bandsman in Britain) here at home which all have a ball on the bottom bow, but they all have rings to attach a carrying strap to as well. The tubas date from 1918, 1923 and 1973.
The ball is protective in as much as they allow you to support the tuba upright on rough or uneven ground without damaging the finish on the bow, but I have seen tubas which have been dropped on the bottom bow, and the ball has been driven into the bow, causing more damage than there might have been without it. So 'protective' is a relative term in this regard.
Can anyone post pictures of tubas carried in harnesses as Lew mentioned?
