I had a 186 CC with those plastic miniballs and managed to keep them breaking for the for about 4 years. I kept them lubricated with a heavy motor oil. This kept them from binding and cracking. Of course, anything made out of cheap plastic will break, so I would spend some money on the metal versions. I believe the metal miniballs are $20 and the plastic are $15.
