More work? I'd say my EE degree was about 10 times the work of my performance degree. I had more natural ability in music, but was at poverty level. I worked my *ss off to get my BSEE, and I, um, am NOT at the poverty level.
You don't always need your backup degree at the same time. I got mine when I was 39, after full realization of the performing world's possibilities. And, I found I didn't LIKE performing, although I loved playing. Go figure.
