Just last week I went to my friends recording studio and tried 5 microphones out to see how good they sounded for tuba. The bass drum mics work best on tuba. Particularly the Audio Technica Pro 25.(About $150) It is not a mini mic. It is short and fat. You will need the larger diaphragm to get a good sound. A practice session is much easier to listen to with a mic that sounds good. When I listend to the playback at my friends studio I found that I sounded better than I had thought. I am used to hearing myself on a small 20 dollar microphone that does not reproduce the tone of my leaky/stuffy 90 year old Eb tuba very well at all. There may be some good quality small microphones available. I havent heard them yet. I have heard the larger bass drum/bass instrument microphones, and they sound great. My opinion.
