I had been using a miraphone 186 (BBb)in a quintet for years. Then I got a Yamaha 621---and I have found it to be superior to the miraphone for most quint pieces. It has superior timbre, is easier to play on fast passages and has more range. But the 621 does have its drawbacks. It is challenging to play rapidly below D (a problem common to most F tubas), it can't be played as loudly as the 186 and for me fatigue of the right arm is a problem because of the valve placement. Also, intonation is trickier for me when playing the 621 (another common trait of F's). So I use both horns, bringing one or the other to rehersal/performance depending on the music. If I had to choose between the two, I'd keep the 621, despite the above. It is just more fun to play.
