I have a '46 Olds Super trombone that has the same thing. It was called a tone ring. It was used so the sound wouldn't break up at extreme volumes. I've played other small bore Olds trombones without the ring, and they do tend to bark at high volumes. Some German trombone manufactures still use them.

My new Miraphone 189-4 has a much narrower ring than the older Miraphones that I've seen. Why? Cheaper?
