Of course the best way is to buy seperate effects rather than multipurpose units.
start with a chorus or Eq. Then build your collection piece by piece. In the long run you'll end up spending more, but the sound quality is much better as long as you avoid the ultra cheap units. Plan on $60 to $300 per effect. My personal opinion. The money would be better spent on a better bass guitar. Better yet. A TUBA
I use my bass effects with my Eb tuba. Lots of fun.
