As Chuck says, it's a matter of appearance and convenience. Don't expect there to be any audible difference in the different coatings. I like silver best, but have never been willing to shell out the bucks. Lacquer looks nice, but it has to be good lacquer to hold up, and nothing is uglier than a partially lacquered tuba. I will likely have the lacquer stripped off my Holton when I get it fully de-dented just so it will look like it was done on purpose.
