I started studying string bass in high school with the principal in Cincinati and early in my career here in Fort Wayne doubled extensively with the orchestra. I played assistant principal in the chamber orchestra and held down last chair(because of logistics of switching back and forth)in the section when I didn't have tuba parts to play in the full orchestra. Had I to do it over, I might have concentrated on bass. When I took a leave from here for a year I broke into the classical freelance scene around Detroit pretty quickly as a bass player.
