The 983 has a longer leadpipe with a slower bore progression than any of the 3+1 models 981 and 982.
Together with less weight and less bell flare this makes the 983 comes out with a more "elegant" sound.
The 981 and 983 both are represented as the main tools of prominent tuba soloists: the virtuosos Sykes and Sheridan respectively.
