Walk a careful line to make sure that you don't look as if you're trying to get the parents to spend money with "your buddy" at the local music store. Folks don't really understand quality issues, and often become suspicious of "steering" - particularly when the prices are obviously going to be significantly higher...and frankly some dubious band director-music store relationships DO exist. On the other hand, your local store should be given a fair chance to compete with online sources. If I come within 5%-10% of the lowest "online" price (even with sales tax added), I nearly always have the sale.

Give them a l-o-n-g list of brands to consider (trying to remove your own prejudices) and several brands that the local store does not sell...What kind of instrument is it?...trumpet?, flute?, clarinet?, sax?, tuba?...

Alpine, Amati/Cerveny, Antigua Winds, Armstrong, Alpine, Bach, Benge, Blessing, Buescher, Conn, D.E.G., Dynasty, Gemeinhardt, Getzen, Jupiter, Kanstul, King, Holton, Leblanc, Noblet, Olds, Reynolds, Selmer, Vito, Weril, Willson, Winston, Yamaha, Yanagisawa,...etc.
