Cheesecloth is used in painting, but it isn't necessarily what would be called a tack cloth at a paint store. The latter often has a stuckum on it to pick up sanding dust, while cheesecloth is an ultra-loose weave cotton used mostly for staining wood (for applications supported by a paint store, that is).

I've always found it easiest to obtain at paint stores, or in the paint department of Home Depot.
