I have doubled for a while now, having first started playing upright in college, then picked up electric shortly after joining the Army. I currently am enjoying a Steinberger 5-string fretless, a 1957 Roth upright, and recently purchased an Ibanez acoustic electric bass guitar. The upright is still my favorite bass as it is the most versatile, even if it is the most difficult to lug around!
Although we all love tuba, there are some weeks (or months) in Atlanta where we'd all starve if we were counting on tuba gigs for bread. In my experience, flexibility is the key to surviving and thriving. October for me was a boatload of tuba playing, November was trombone month, and December seems to be shaping up primarily as string bass month. I would encourage young players to learn a double - it may be important later!
