My kids and did not have the opportunity for them to participate in a band. As a professional musician I was very dissappointed that their only outlet was the community band and things I could involve them in. They NEEDED a school band to get the social (such as it is) as well as the musical experience.
I recommend that if your son wants to play the tuba that you plan to incorporate the local school band into the program.
Tuba is a fine instrument to learn but it's hard to maintain interest in any instrument unless you have a regular performance outlet.
