I know how things that I learned as a kid are still in memory, while stuff I memorized at a later date, has left.
Since I didn't start playing brasses until I was 45....it has been interesting. I've learned all these different fingerings in just the last year or so when I took up tuba....but I find my biggest problem with fast playing even on horn (my first brass) is that sometimes the fingers don't keep up with the embouchure, or just get darn confused. Sometimes in the earlier horn music that goes all over the place, I'm better off pretending to play un-valved horn because I hit more notes that way, by putting down whatever valve(s) fit the key and just going for the notes with chops only.
yeah, the brain is a weird lil thang.
