...that some excerpts are just much simpler with the use of false tones. The stuff in the Scherzo movement of Mahler 5. Trombonists will notice a difference, trust me. Fountains, the ride, Prokofievs Romeo and Juliet (monatagues and capulets). There are a lot more. Its maybe not practical in a solo situation, say in front of a commitee by yourself, but in a performance situation it works. They can be more responsive, in tune, project more, and be more flexible than "real" tones. The difference is pretty much undetectable when done right by someone who knows how to use them effectively. Besides its a great excercise to develope low register consistancy. Going back and forth between "true" tones and fake tones is really a great work out, and improves overall intonation in the low register. Not to mention that the ladies love it. ;)
