I find that the best false tones are found on large-bore, large-throat piston horns, like Conn 20Js and 20Ks, Holton 345s, and such. These horns can produce false tones with a tone and control identical to standard open tones. Many rotary horns have good ones, like my old MW 25, but my giant Cerveny 601 had pitiful false tones even though it had a huge bore, throat, and bell. My current King 2341 has mediocre false tones (big bell, small bore); I can't make the false tones sound like the normal tones, but I can still play them with a fair amount of volume. Their tone is thin and lacking in upper harmonics.
