The tuba is an excellent all-around performer--it is extremely responsive and "speaks" and projects well in all registers. As an occasional associate of Mr. Phillips, I have seen the care and work that have gone into the development and refinement of the instrument. I urge you to try the horn out! In the hands of a solid performer, the horn should have no trouble fitting into any musical context--solo, quintet, chamber brass, wind ensemble, or orchestra. A horn doesn't have to BE big to PLAY big.It is a four-valve instrument.
You might also ask Norlan Bewley...he plays the Bb version.
