it used to be that everyone used mid-sized CC tubas for all the studio stuff, mainly horns like Mirafone 186's and 188's, but as film orchestras have gotten larger as have recording spaces, the tubas have gotten larger as well. A mainstay of both Tommy Johnson's and Jim Self's arsenals is the Yamaha 822 F tuba (Tommy's being the F/CC double) and they both use large CC's for a lot of stuff too.
