I've gotten the opportunity to play this piece with a band once, and twice with an accompanist on recitals, and even in between performances, I was still putting fine touches on parts of the piece. All I can say is be patient with the piece. It will take a while to work up to where it needs to be, and will be one of those pieces that you will find something different or new to do with it every time you perform it. Pay close attention to the specific dynamics that Ellerby wrote, especially in the outer movements, as it creates a sense of dramatics. It's a great piece once you understand it, and the only way I recommend to practice and prepare for this piece is to be patient and pay attention to close detail. Don't learn the piece "wrong" just so that you can perform it sooner. Patience is a virtue! Hope this helped a little. Good luck with the piece!
