I have an old wick mute and a not so old yamaha. the differences are: the pipe on the yamaha is a skeleton, not a full tube, so there is a little less resitance. also, when playing with the electronics, which only sort of sound ok, the psychology for me and some other competent brass players i know is that if you are getting immediacy and sound a little closer to playing with no mute at all, then you play more relaxed and don't wear yourself out. this is the conclusion we've come to. by the way, I go out of my way not to use this mute. the headaches of any kind of pratice mute are, for me, so great that I will go out of my way to find some school or church or anything else. still, it does mean i can visit my parents for more than two days this month, and when you're on the road your neighboors hate you much less.
