I have played the ellerby twice in competition. Once with reasanable success and the other winning.
It ranks amongst the hardest I have played and I think the only thing that got me through was the a huge amount of preparation and revision.
Having said that, I am one that needs to do a lot of work in most cases. Others that have an advanced reading technique may not need as much time to prepare.
As for the question on needing a strong double tongue style. I believe that anyone attempting this piece should be advanced to the point of having a strong double tongue as a bare minimum before even attemping this concerto.
I didnt like it at first but once I got to know the ;peice, I found it a very enjoyable experience.
