I'm interested in buying an old U.S.-made 4 banger horn, and a dealer is offering me a silverplated King with 4 pistons, detachable upright bell, with a leadpipe that needs to be replaced. It comes with cases, and he's asking $1800. I asked him for the serial number, so that I can tell what era it's from, but he says there's no serial number on the valves or valve casings. Does anyone know where there might be another location for the King serial numbers? I asked him for a picture of the engraving on the bell, so that I can see how "vintage" that looks. I was offered a 1914 Conn with upright bell and 4 pistons for $800, making the price of the King seem very high, but I know that the early Conns have intonation problems.
Can anyone help find these serial numbers and suggest a price range for these horns so that I'll know if it's just me who thinks it's a little high?
I'd really appreciate any comments.
P.S. - feel free to post any vintage 4 valve US horns you have for sale, too! ;)
