I would definitely try to find a teacher while learning CC fingering. With a 5-valve CC there are more fingering choices than with a 4-valve BBb, and it really helps to have someone experienced with CC tubas suggest the most appropriate choice for each situation (for example 235 often (but not always) works better than 24 on CC tubas with a flat-whole-step fifth valve).

As for the change, do it cold turkey and be patient with yourself. If you have ever played trumpet or treble clef euphonium, it may help to remember those fingerings (e.g. open for a written C).
