With regard to respect - I have it from an unimpeachable source, a major player and a very early pupil, that it was Mrs. Jacobs who disliked hearing her husband called or referred to as "Jake." As others have observed, it didn't seem to bother him in the least. Now that he's gone, that's how many of us think of him. That's how he was referred to at the Orchestra Hall tribute in December 1998 by Gene Pokorny and others who spoke at that event. Be assurred the respect is there, but at the same time, those who knew him don't want to sanctify him out of all human proportion. His human qualities, even foibles if you will, were such endearing personal qaulities. As only "Jake" could be.
