Ditto everything Jay just said.

Now what I really wanted to add is this...along with playing music, or doing anything for that matter, there comes a time when you may fail. Failure will produce one of two results: 1) a big aversion to ever trying again or 2) Strength and resolve to get back at it and try harder, AND SUCCEED. The biggest crime is to think you can't do it.

Now for grading...sure, it stings when you fail. Remember though, it's NOT a personal attack. Giving good grades for the sake of a student's self-esteem is too politically correct and totally bogus! If a teacher gives grades out on that basis, then he REALLY robs the student of the genuine self-esteem that comes as a result of hard work. Once the student knows what it's like, he/she will crave THAT instead of the handouts.

Climbing to the top isn't easy. In the real world, many people don't give a flying flip how your feelings are if you're not performing the job up to standards. My advice...rely on your inner strength and work harder until there is no question that you are really giving it your all. Play all 4 quarters of the proverbial football game. It's important to keep an honest, clear head throughout it all. Know when to push harder, and know when to give yourself a break...balance is key.

Most important...ENJOY yourself and the growing process...even the painful parts.
