Thanks for saying it better than I did! Your statement "if memorization happens, fine, if not, so what." is exactly the sentiment I was trying to convey in my post. Memorization has happened to me in the same way as for you. I know many excerpts, some etudes, some solos, and many rudiments of music well enough that I can play them from memory. But I never actively set out to memorize these things. It just happened over time. My comment about memorization being an obstacle was directed at the practice of memorizing for its own sake, not being tied to actually knowing the piece any better. When memorization occurs "naturally", through a thorough understanding of the music, I think maybe we're talking about a different animal entirely.
