Try this:

Take two very different mouthpieces, say a Helleberg 7B and a PT-88. Play some things that really show the tone colors of each. Now, you may be able to produce pleasing tones with both, but I'll bet one will require far less work than the other. I'll even go out on a limb and say that I can't conceive the idea of getting anywhere near the same tone from those two mouthpieces. In other words, yes the sound is in your head, but one mouthpiece makes it much easier to get that sound out of your bell.

Also; on the tips page, in the upper left-hand corner you will see this

Arnold Jacobs masterclass from the 1973 ITEC
Warming up

Click on the link & listen to it. Towards the end you'll hear Mr. Jacobs say words to the effect 'as you heard, the change in mouthpiece produced a dramatic change in sound' or something very much like that. I submit that if Mr. Jacobs got different sounds by changing mouthpieces, then I wouldn't be too chagrined if it did the same for me. :-)
