I don't know about the best tuba player ever, but the best orchestral player I've ever heard would have to be Chester Schmitz of the Boston Symphony/Pops Orchestra. He always plays in style and can produce a huge and wonderful tone when needed. My band director who worked at Symphony Hall (the BSO's home) got the privilege of listening to him (Chester) warm-up every day because he was always the first one there to rehearsal. He said: "that guy filled up the entire auditorium by himself". Not to say others aren't good players, but he is MY favorite. There's my opinion.
