So far no one has mentioned Prokofiev's 6th Symphony, overshadowed by the popularity and instant audience appeal of the 5th. The 6th is a profound and tragic work, Prokofiev at his most honest and self-revealing. The tuba participates fully in this powerfully expressive piece, often at great exposure. It is difficult to imagine that Prokofiev entrusted his orchestration to others. It would have to have been, at the very least, close collaboration. Also check out the full-length Cinderella, in some ways less affecting and more frivolous than Romeo and Juliet, but (believe it) better writing, an incredible ear-trip, and a great piece to play should you ever be so fortunate.

I have played Stone Flower which is a patch job, and you can tell the difference. It was fun to do, very engaging and challenging. Prokofiev is in there, but not "all there." Kind of like those "performing versions" of Mahler's 10th. And those are cool too.
