Wow, what an interesting article. That filled in a LOT of major gaps in my knowledge of my second-favorite instrument. I was not aware that the F & G bass bones were used in orchestras as recently as the 1950's!
This article brings up one objection to the American bass trombone in Bb and F that is no longer valid with the addition of a second valve: you can now EASILY play a B natural, and generally find your way around the full scale of the instrument pretty easily. Still, I'm going to have to find one of these beasts to play someday.
