This is a great thread!! I am also on the verge of 40, and definitely seeing myself on the slide physically. I have aches & pains, don't see or hear as well as I did 10 years ago, that sort of thing. But I still DO things better than I did. I think this is because I've learned HOW TO LEARN. It's partly the focus others have talked about, and it's partly a confidence that comes with surviving a certain number of calamities. It's also partly the experience of X number of years in your skin, and a greater awareness of body and mind (the awareness of body coming partly FROM those aches and pains!) I am absolutely a better player than I was in college, even though I don't practice half as much. My pitch is more precise, my tone is better, my phrasing more lyrical. I am more aware of the ensemble, I blend better, and am more musical.

I just need wheels on my case now.
