For all the Folks in the Metro D.C./Maryland/Northern Virginia area -

If you aren't too busy this weekend, you should check out the Levine
School of Music's "Brass Weekend 2000" this Saturday and Sunday, March
04 and 05.

The featured artists for the weekend will be The Monumental Brass
Quintet, and special guest Chris Gekker on trumpet.

I will be playing tuba with the MBQ for the festival, as I am their
acting "interim" tuba player for the time being.

On Saturday, 04 March, the MBQ will present a Mini concert and
Master class at 1:00 p.m. That evening, Chris Gekker, Professor
of Trumpet at the University of Maryland (and an AMAZING trumpet
soloist) will be giving a full recital.

On Sunday, 05 March, at 2:00, the MBQ and Chris Gekker will perform a
joint concert, which will include the tune "Blechblasersextett es-moll,
op. 30" (Brass Sextet in e flat minor) by Oskar Bohme (1870 - 1938).

This tune is essentially solo trumpet and quintet. I was not familiar
with this tune until this gig, and I can tell you that this piece
alone will be worth catching the concert for. Not only is it rather
substantial in length (almost 20 minutes), it is also one of the most
musically and technically challenging quintet tunes I've played in a
long time. Lots of fun, for both the quintet and the audience.

There will also be various master classes and clinics throughout
the entire weekend.

Any way, if you are around D.C. this weekend, you should check it out.
The Levine School of Music is located at 2801 Upton Street, NW, in
Washington, D.C.

And if you come to "Brass Weekend 2000", please come up and say hi.
I'll be the guy with the tuba...

Later -
