Brian, one of the biggest things I have had to deal with the past year or so is the tension in my throat. I have found that I have to breath about 20% more often than I did 10 years ago(I checked the phrasing marks I have made on music and tried to play them). This was the only way I found to reduce the tension. Also, realizing that this was happening helped to alleviate it by using more air more often. I will be 40 in July and have noticed that I am playing better and have to tell my MIND that i can't control the aging process, just find ways to fool it.
