Rick,

Don't feel too bad. I started in the 5th grade and never played a tuba (played only on sousaphones of various vintages) until I was in college. There was no tuba player close enough to take lessons from. I quit for a time after college and then re-started when I was 39. I had my first lessons with a tuba player (very good one, at that) and bought my first horn at age 39. This year marks 50 years since I started. My 15 year-old son plays horn and is on his second horn already. He has had very good instruction. More power to him. If he has the same love of music that I do, but can acquire better skills and equipment than I had, he could derive even more joy than I have had. I get the thrill of sitting behind him in a community band each week. I don't need anything else.
