I can't agree with that hypothesis. I've heard it, remembered it when you asked your question, and avoided addressing it because of one obvious recollection:

Old Conn 20K sousaphone bells are THICK as the "dickens", and they ring like crazy. On the other hand, when they have been "overhauled" 3 or 4 times and are paper thin, the ringing is absent.

That is BACKWARDS of what many seem to thing about "thick" vs. "thin".

Moreover, when one puts their hand on a THICK 20K bell and stops the ringing noise, it sounds exactly like an old buffed-down THIN one.
