Seldom, but occassionally, I teach students. When they are playing a CC or BBb instrument and I am playing an F instrument, I sometimes "sympathise" (your "hear"-"mash" thing) with them and start trying to jam THEIR fingerings on to MY instrument - in a "play-along" or "demo". (BTW, that "wrong fingering patterns" thing doesn't work very well.)
My perfect pitch works when I can concentrate. If people arent getting in my face and asking questions...or waiting for me to hurry up and do something so they can tell me what to do next, I can tune a violin or guitar from "scratch" (floppy strings) or hum a Bb (by remembering those super-imprinted "band" sounds...or play back in my head (from remembering the dreaded beginnings of endless rehearsals) an oboe "A" if I need to.
