I'd suggest going to your tuba prof and persuade him to pay a visit to the financial aid department. Schools sometimes have loans for special purposes, and if both you and your professor are trying to get the money, the financial aid officer might just break down and give you a loan. You'll probably have to convince them that the tubas available to rent are inadequate, though.
