I played in a dance band years ago with a couple of trumpet players who used the strange oval mouthpieces. They said it was easier on the chops. I always thought one had a slighty blatty sort of sound. A little Clyde McCoyish maybe? The other guy was actually a sax player that helped out on trumpet when we were in a pinch. He played both very well. He had a totally diferent sound with it. The first guy started playing before WWII and I think it was just the sound he had grew up hearing and liked. As I remember they were nylon or plastic or something like that.
This is probably of little help but it's what I can remember from some 30 years ago.
